“A progress zone is a silver ring right outside your comfort zone.”

At the end of last month, we had the gift of hosting an in-person workshop in Phoenix with the board members of Arizonans for Responsible Tourism and the Scottsdale STRA. In one session, we held a panel with three of the longest-serving AZRT board members dissecting what makes them model leaders.

When we asked what made them decide to raise their hands for leadership, all three said some variation of, “I didn’t know how to lead a coalition, but I said yes anyway.”

In other words, the key to their success was not previous experience. They felt fear or discomfort or uncertainty and still took a leap of faith because, as one leader put it, they’re “self-growth junkies.”

That’s what happens when you find yourself in the silver ring just on the other side of comfort: growth.

What you also find in that silver ring? Support from people who want you to succeed!

Our team carried this spirit through our company retreat that followed our workshop. We intentionally tried things that were uncomfortable and things we may have thought we wouldn’t like, and we did so together.

Each of us grew in profound ways, making us better at what we do – which is to support alliance leaders in their own silver rings of growth.

The short-term rental community is full of people who operate in silver rings. After all, there is no degree for what we do! Most of us have fallen into it by saying yes to some uncertain opportunity, like Linda Curry, AZRT President and one of the three workshop panelists mentioned above; Melissa Wright, who started a business helping Oregon hosts navigate complex local permitting processes; even me!

How will you step outside your comfort zone this month and say yes to growth? (Tell us in our Facebook group!)

Happy progress,
