What the Vacation Rental Industry Can Learn from the Olympics
Consistency is key
To have even a slight chance at an Olympic medal means years of consistent training. Olympians put in their 10,000 hours and then some, the consistent performance improvement that compounds day after day to propel these athletes from amateur to elite. Score yourself out of 10: how consistent are you?
Up your game by consistently putting your best face forward, setting the right expectations for your guests, and build bridges with others in your community.
So are flexibility and adaptability
The need for consistency doesn’t stop when it rains or when they don’t feel like training – or when a pandemic halts the Games and upends training. Still, today’s Olympians kept going, building DIY gyms, installing squat racks on SUVs, and sledgehammering cement (which, honestly, sounds even more badass than their regular hardcore training).
2020 was the year of adaptation, getting creative to find new ways to persevere and thrive, and the need for hosts and managers to flex and adapt has not ended. Take a half-time and reflect: How are you taking care of your guests, homeowners, staff and yourself in this transformative time?
Flex your skills by giving the rush of rookie guests an assist by answering their tough questions in firm but friendly ways, or make sure you can be ready to help an injured teammate get back on their feet.
Taking a moment to get grounded
All-star gymnast Simone Biles shocked the world when she bowed out of several events, citing the need to care for her mental health under the pressure of being one of the greatest athletes in history. She had begun experiencing what gymnasts call “the twisties,” a mind-body disconnect and mid-air disorientation that can result in serious injury when the athlete loses sight of where they’re supposed to land.
As we face high-flying travel demand and walk the balance beam of public health, we must pause and ask: Are we moving so fast to keep up that we might too get “the twisties” and lose sight of the ground?
Check in with your inner self-coach: Check that your property is still compliant with all applicable laws, make sure to fly the flag of your neighbors and neighborhood just as much as you do for your town, and always think back to why you started hosting in the first place.

New Gold-Medal Teammates
Yesterday, Rent Responsibly made a couple exciting announcements:
We have recently teamed up with local alliances in two new markets: Summit County, Colorado and Scottsdale, Arizona! We are honored to work with the local leaders and members of Summit Alliance of Vacation Rental Managers (SAVRM) and the Scottsdale Short-Term Rental Alliance (SSTRA). If you’re in either of these areas and you haven’t yet joined your alliance, now’s the perfect time. See you there!
We have also added a new teammate to our Founding Partner team: Futurestay! Futurestay empowers small property management businesses to thrive in the complex hospitality industry with a roadmap for success, automated distribution on leading channels, direct booking growth and optimized revenues.
“At our core, we bring together industry leaders and experts to help educate the STR community, and Futurestay is the ideal partner,” said Dave Krauss, Rent Responsibly’s co-founder and CEO. “When we all row in the same direction, we can build solutions faster and for more communities. These partnerships are a win-win-win.”

The most important lesson of all
Perhaps the most important moment of these Olympic Games wasn’t on a court or in a pool or in a training facility. On July 20, the International Olympic Committee approved a change to the organization’s 126-year-old motto, Citius, Altius, Fortius – Faster, Higher, Stronger. They added a single yet monumental word: Communiter – Together.
That’s what the Rent Responsibly community is here for: consistently moving forward together. And we are so thankful you are a part of it.
Communiter,
