Rent Responsibly is a national network of short-term rental groups. Through remote support services and centralized technology, we enable local chapters of advocates to work together with their policy-makers and communities effectively to create fair, balanced rules for short-term rentals in their towns.

The Staff Writer owns the production of most of the content on Rent Responsibly’s editorial calendar and takes a leading role in ensuring all published materials uphold our brand standards and voice. The Staff Writer has a wide skill set and passion for all types of written content, from journalistic reporting to content marketing to PR.

The Staff Writer will report to the Executive Director. This role is expected to start in February and will be part-time at 20-35 hours/week with likely future opportunities to become full-time.

Primary Duties:

  • Draft and edit content across a variety of formats and mediums, including guides, feature profiles, news articles, ad campaign copy, PR materials, social media posts, and email campaigns.
  • Own the end-to-end creation of a piece of content, from topic creation, sourcing subjects and screening sources to writing, editing and formatting the piece for publication.
  • Research subjects and topics thoroughly, including verifying all first-hand accounts.
  • Refine and polish existing copy across all platforms.
  • Identify and create new educational resources needed to support members.
  • Contribute to and polish digital ad campaigns copy, including PPC and social media advertising.
  • Contribute to special projects, such as pilots and surveys.

Secondary Duties:

  • Assist in the creation of LTEs and op-eds.
  • Periodically audit RentResponsibly.org and chapter sites for opportunities to improve page or post copy.
  • Assist in non-written content production, including videos and podcasts.

Qualities:

  • You love to write. It’s how you best express yourself, and your written communication is second to none. You naturally make complex topics simple, and you can balance journalistic integrity with engaging storytelling.
  • You have experience in journalism as a reporter or other content producer for a media publication.
  • You have experience with and enjoy interviewing people for stories and don’t shy away from digging for answers or adjusting your story plan on the fly.
  • You’ve done some work in content marketing writing.
  • You get to know your audiences and can adapt your writing style to meet them where they are.
  • You can copy edit for proper grammar, brand voice, and clarity without losing the original author’s voice.
  • You have supreme attention to detail. An improper capitalization or misplaced comma does not get past you.
  • You love finding the exact right word or phrase, but you don’t let perfection get in the way of producing quality work on deadline.
  • You are adept at managing your time. You can juggle projects and shuffle priorities flexibly. You’re versed in saying “Yes, but…” or “No, but…” to new requests.
  • You are comfortable working with small teams that collaborate and shift often.
  • If you’ve taken a DISC assessment, you probably rate high on the C scale.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience in the short-term and vacation rental industry
  • Experience in government relations and/or the policy making process
  • Experience in non-written content forms

What It’s Like to Work for Rent Responsibly

Rent Responsibly is a 100% remote team regardless of Covid-19. We collaborate daily through Slack, Zoom, GSuite tools, and Todoist. We don’t measure our days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. but through productivity and execution. Our teammates must be self directed and have (or be able to create) the ideal remote work environment for themselves, including reliable connectivity.

We are a small but nimble and enthusiastic team, so those who are willing to jump in with both feet on team projects, wear multiple hats, and then switch those hats on the fly will be happiest here. We invest in our teammates’ growth, too, including professional development resources, ample opportunities to take on higher roles as the company grows, and space to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors.

Benefits:

  • Competitive hourly rate commensurate with skills and experience
  • Work from anywhere
  • Flex Fridays: No internal meetings on Fridays so you can spend your day getting sh*t done any way you like.
  • Quarterly Flex Weeks: No internal or external meetings allowed so you can tackle deep work, personal professional development projects, and other things that require uninterrupted focus and flexibility.

To Apply:

Send an email to our Executive Director at info [at] rentresponsibly.org sharing why your experience, skills and qualities make you a good fit for this role. Please include links to samples of your work. Please also attach your resume.
