I do believe in an everyday sort of magic – the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we’re alone.

Everyday Sort of Magic

We believe in magic. If you work in short-term and vacation rentals, you can’t not believe in it. There is magic in being able to offer a place to guests and send them home with memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime. There is magic in getting to know those you would never have crossed paths with otherwise. There is magic in being able to open a furnished, comforting home to those in need in the wake of tragedy.

It’s easy to miss it in the hustle and bustle of turnovers and bookings, but when we take a moment to pause and look, it’s not hard to find. When I reflected on all the new stories on RentResponsibly.org this past month, everyday magic was there staring me in the face.

🕖 A moment of synchronicity

Just a few days before the Surfside condo collapse, Andreas King-Geovanis and his Miami-based company, Sextant Stays, had just signed on to manage a vacant 17-unit building five miles away. So, within 48 hours, he and his team did 40 days worth of work to ready every single unit to accommodate displaced residents of Champlain Towers South for free.

🪄 Conjuring time

Rachel Hopper began hosting to create time and flexibility to care for her mother, who has cancer, and her toddler without losing a source of income. But when a state bill threatened her hosting, she knew the first step in protecting it was lending an ear to her neighbors.

🔮 A voice and a (not-so-hidden) presence

For Leslie Oestermann, owner of Scottsdale-based Just Stay, concierges aren’t just a nice perk for guests – they are ambassadors to the neighborhood, together creating the harmonious future they envision for their community.

✨ Inexplicable connectedness

The magic of TV has a way of transporting us, especially in the past year. Netflix’s new series The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals couldn’t have come at a better time, reminding us all about the wonders vacation rentals can create, and why many of us started hosting in the first place.

Now, let’s go work our magic.
