Power and Light

Last week, I had the joy and honor of speaking at VRMA’s Spring Summit in Kansas City, Missouri. (Shout-out to VRMA for a great show.) I must admit I knew nothing about the city, so I’m grateful for my Uber driver, Micheal, who pointed out popular restaurants, attractions, and neighborhoods as we drove up to Leows Kansas City Hotel. Leows overlooks Power and Light, the district named for its famed Art Deco tower once home to the Kansas City Power & Light Co.

First commissioned by the company for offices and storefronts in 1931, the building is bedecked in sunbursts and grand decor, has tapering stepbacks to its top to allow sunlight to pass to the city streets, and is crowned by a prismatic lantern.

Today, the building is now a luxury apartment building, and the Power and Light District is a hotspot for dining, entertainment, and easy access to the city’s relatively new T-Mobile Center and Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

The layers of symbolism in this eight-block neighborhood run a mile deep. Its roots reflect two of the most significant advancements that created the world we know today: power and light. Its conversion into residences and a cultural hub a century later transformed the area into an area sought-after by locals and tourists alike – a revitalization effort considered award-winning to some but a catalyst for financial inaccessibility for others, as another Uber driver, Ibrahim, noted on a drive along new tram line construction.

And on top of the local outcomes, we can’t ignore the profound negative externalities energy use has had on our entire planet.

Short-term rentals are markedly interrelated with these weighty topics. That’s why our next RR Summit on April 18 – 19 is called People, Places, Planet. We’ll take a deep look not just at environmental consciousness but the longevity of our businesses and communities, and how we take care of ourselves to make sure we’re here for the long haul.

And if you need some social proof, just ask the six (and counting!) podcasters who will be joining the Summit for a Podcast Takeover! In addition to expert sessions with partners, several familiar industry voices will be joining us for live recorded podcast sessions and fascinating conversations.

This RR Summit will bring new power to operators of all experience levels and shine a bright light on insights and strategies to help you, your business, and your community stand the test of time. Registration is now open – save your spot!

See you there,
