Somehow it’s already Thanksgiving again. To say we are grateful for the job we get to do and the people we get to work with every day is an understatement.
In our weekly all-team meeting every Monday, we always wrap up with shoutouts to our team members. It’s my favorite five minutes of every week. So starting with this issue of our newsletter, we’ll be extending our virtual high-fives to you, our community members.
In honor of the Vacation Rental Women’s Summit (VRWS) in two weeks, this issue celebrates many of the amazing women who inspire us on a daily basis. To shout out just a few of many:
- Alline Arguelles for leading CAEHS to an unprecedented ballot victory in Telluride
- Fran Maier for her artful leadership of the Santa Fe STRA and her recent hosting of a mayoral and council candidate panel
- April Brenneman and Debi Hertert for refusing to take no for an answer
- Francine Rollock for saying yes to new adventures in retirement
- Our own Paris Achen, the one-of-a-kind staff writer who captures these amazing stories
- Kelly Lee for representing the Oahu STRA in a panel on PBS Hawaii
- Sarah Bradford and Suzie Spiro for kicking off the Steamboat Steamboat Springs Community Preservation Alliance with a town hall that makes advocacy and civic engagement accessible and fun for all
- Don’t miss Sarah’s panel at the VRWS, Combating Harmful Vacation Rental Regulations in Leisure Destinations
- Ashley Kubiszyn, Mary Waldman, Abbey Browne, and Julia Koster for deftly navigating the Summit Alliance of Vacation Rental Managers through this season’s torrent of regulatory discussions across Summit County, CO
- Don’t miss Ashley’s VRWS presentation on Navigating Negative Reviews and her panel session, A League of Their Own: Polish through Professionalization
- Lisa Sievers and Shelby Fletcher for representing the Dallas STRA on the City of Dallas STR task force
- Our own Abbi Booth for jumping in with both feet to make every hour these fearless alliance leaders spend on advocacy go 10x as far
- Our own Dana Lubner for taking Denver Mile High Host’s Good Neighbor Summit statewide across CO this December and launching Season 2 of the advocacy podcast How to Save Your Vacation Rental Business
- Sue Jones of HR4VR for her priceless guidance of our team and countless others to help every professional accomplish more than she thinks she can
- Don’t miss her VRWS session Leadership Propels Employee Engagement and Retention
- Melinda Patience at the College of Charleston for her incredible work on our recent State of the STR Community Survey
- Our own Bri Pope and Jenna Fuhrman for fostering a new cohort of partnerships and generating more than 4,500 responses to the State of the STR Community Survey
- Come see Bri, Jenna and me for a sneak peek of the results and what they mean for you in our VRWS session Exclusive First Look: Findings from Rent Responsibly’s 2022 State of the STR Community Report
- Amy Hinote and Rebecca Chapman for the dedicated and tireless work they have put in to make the VRWS the conference of the year and all that they do for readers of VRM Intel every single day
Each of these women has raised her hand to go above and beyond, to not let a problem go unsolved, to face and conquer seemingly insurmountable challenges, to lead others into uncharted territories and empower them along the way. So while their hands are up, don’t leave them hanging. If you know them, please give them a high five and a note of thanks for all that they do.

Stronger Together: Telluride, Colorado short-term rental alliance makes ballot history
One silver lining to the Covid shut-down? Early practice in mobilizing a unified community effort to head off an even bigger threat: an anti-STR citizen’s ballot initiative.
+ Bonus shout-out to Key Data for equipping Telluride with the data needed to make informed decisions 💡
What does a Portland cancer survivor’s treehouse have to do with short-term rental insurance? A lot.
April Brenneman and Debi Hertert do not take no for an answer. When a case of bedbugs shut down the listings of Portland’s favorite treehouse, April, Debi and the STR community rallied to get the listings back online and find an insurance provider who would cover bedbugs.
+ Bonus shout-out to Proper Insurance for coming to the rescue 💪
When Fran isn’t leading advocacy efforts in Santa Fe or building relationships with elected officials, she makes the most of the freedom and flexibility of vacation rentals, like collecting art and taking startups all the way to Shark Tank – you know, casual, everyday hobbies.
+ Bonus shout-out to Expedia Group / Vrbo for supporting the Santa Fe STRA 💙
Retirement is for the snowbirds: A couple’s surprise career encore in vacation rentals abroad
What do you do when someone asks you to start a business you’ve never done before, in a foreign country, where you don’t speak the language, and you’re supposed to be retired? If you’re Francine and Kevin Rollock, you say yes, of course.
+ Bonus shout-out to Futurestay for empowering people like the Rollocks ⚡️
