The Magic of “Yes, And”

Lately, I’ve been on a binge of comedy podcasts and the British version of the improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway? It seems as if nearly every comedian got his or her start in improv.

There’s something beautiful about this comedic art in that the participants start with the same basic concept but have no idea where the story is going to end up – where it goes is determined by two magic words: “Yes, and.”

The premise of the yes, and rule is that each participant accepts the proposition from another and then adds to it. The same concept applies well in business during brainstorming sessions. Nos are a no-no.

The magic is that by saying “Yes, and…,” a team of people create something better than what they would have created solo.

RR X VRMA

Earlier this month, Rent Responsibly made our first conference appearance as a team at the VRMA International Conference in San Antonio, Texas. As we reflect on the event, we feel incredibly grateful for all the work VRMA put into an amazing conference, for the opportunity to (finally!) meet several of our alliance leaders in person, for all of the lessons from conversations and expert-led sessions, and for the rare occasion our remote team got to spend time together in person.

In our reflections on conversations at the event and throughout the year as a whole, we’ve also noticed a pattern of “this not that” and “us versus them” sentiments creeping into dialogue within and outside of the industry. As I decompressed from “conference brain” and got back to Whose Line, I realized we have a lot to learn from improv; For short-term and vacation rentals to flourish together with our communities, collaboration and open-mindedness are essential.

🏘️  Yes, short-term rentals can be successful and be great neighbors.

🏳️‍🌈  Yes, we do a good job marketing properties, and we need to do better at creating more inclusive spaces for diverse guests.

⚡  Yes, legacy vendors and all-in-one solutions bring tons of insight to our space, and startups and specialized providers add to our collective breadth of knowledge and strengths.

👔  Yes, traditional property managers have long exemplified professionalism, and new, independent owners, hosts, and managers bring in valuable non-industry professional experience, creative thinking and a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit.

🤝  Yes, we need to make sure our elected officials hear our solutionsand we need to listen to what our communities need in order to find the win-wins.

Yes, And in San Diego

We are excited to announce the onboarding of the new San Diego STRA! After many months of collaboration with the boards of the former Share San Diego and the Short-Term Rental Alliance of San Diego, we are proud to support the merger of the two groups and their stellar leadership into one powerhouse organization.

When we stop thinking of things as either/or and embrace the spirit of yes, and, we create better solutions and outcomes together.

What will you say yes, and to this month?
